Converting your outboard to outboard jet

What information you’ll need

Have the information from your motor’s identification plate and existing setup ready:

• Manufacturer and engine family
• Stroke type and horsepower
• Model year and, when needed, the exact model or family designation
• Steering or control type, such as tiller or remote
• Shaft length
• Displacement or other application details when the Finder asks for them

Some motors share a horsepower and year range but use different gearcases, generations, or configurations. Those additional questions keep the result tied to the correct application instead of assuming that horsepower alone is enough.

Supported manufacturer paths

Mercury / Mariner. The current Finder separates 2-Stroke and 4-Stroke applications across compact through V6 families and may ask for family, displacement, control, shaft, or other details. Force is not a current Finder-supported path; if you have a Force motor, contact Rainboat before ordering. Shop Mercury / Mariner Jet Kits.

Yamaha. The Finder keeps 2-Stroke and 4-Stroke applications distinct across the active F-series and VMAX SHO families. Standard and VMAX SHO families can require different paths, and model family, suffix, or displacement may matter. Shop Yamaha Jet Kits.

Johnson / Evinrude. The active Finder paths cover Johnson / Evinrude 2-Stroke, Evinrude E-TEC, and 4-Stroke application families, which remain separate in the Finder. Evinrude E-TEC G2 is not presented as a normal current Finder path; use Contact if your motor is outside the listed options. Shop Johnson / Evinrude Jet Kits.

Honda. Current online coverage is 4-Stroke across several Honda application families, and exact year, horsepower, control, and shaft details matter. Some Honda applications include factory gear-set work or other installation requirements; any applicable catalog notes are shown with the result. Shop Honda Jet Kits.

Suzuki. Current 2-Stroke and 4-Stroke Suzuki families remain application-specific, so the exact year and model details still matter even when horsepower overlaps another path. Shop Suzuki Jet Kits.

Tohatsu / Nissan. The active Finder covers 2-Stroke and 4-Stroke Tohatsu / Nissan application families and may distinguish tiller or cable-control requirements where the application calls for them. Shop Tohatsu / Nissan Jet Kits.

Shaft length and control type matter

Tiller and remote-control motors can use different application paths, and shaft length must match the boat and the kit. There is no single motor-height number that applies to every boat. Use the Finder’s shaft and control questions, then follow the selected kit’s application and installation instructions.

Why displacement and model family can change the result

Two motors with the same horsepower and model year can still use different jet applications. Displacement, engine family, generation, suffix, or gearcase configuration can separate one kit family from another. This is why the Finder may ask for additional model or displacement details before it locks a result.

What changes during a prop-to-jet conversion?

A jet drive replaces the propeller-driven gearcase with a jet unit that uses an intake, impeller, and nozzle to create thrust. The jet sits and operates differently from a propeller gearcase, so boat and transom setup, application-specific hardware, and final adjustment matter. Follow the kit and manufacturer instructions, and get qualified marine help if you are unsure about the installation.
